Award of Excellence

Hurray! The USC pilot where I was one of the leads has won the Award of Excellence at the Accolades Competition, a leading television content competition that often reviews professional aired works in multiple categories. It won in the PILOT category, which meant it competed against professional pilots. Here is the press release below:

Creator Krystal Jalene Thomas Accepts The Accolade for the USC School of Cinematic Arts Dramatic Pilot Presentation, The Real Life.

(Los Angeles, CA, 10/24/2007) The Real Life, a dramatic pilot presentation created by Krystal Jalene Thomas, has won the prestigious Award of Excellence for a Pilot Program (not yet broadcasted) from The Accolade Competition. "To be considered good enough to compete in this category is an honor," says Thomas, Executive Producer and 2007 graduate of the USC Peter Stark Producing Program, "but winning is extraordinary and a major validation for 50 fellow SC students passionate about television."

The Accolade Competition, now in its fifth year, honors established and emerging talent that demonstrates exceptional achievement in craft and creativity. The Real Life now joins the ranks of other top tier, high profile projects winning this internationally respected award. "The Accolade is not easy to win," said Thomas Baker, PhD, Chairman of The Competition. "Entries are received from around the world. This project from concept to production was so well done. We are excited to see what happens next."

The Real Life is the bizarre tale of a life coach dedicated to helping reality show rejects deal with life after fifteen minutes of fame. David Pevsner leads a cast of up and coming actors including Teria Birlon, Jonathan Brett, Chyna Chuu, Heather Ling, Joanna Kelly, Korey Knecht and Carmen Perez. "This cast really committed to the story and the project," remarks Crystal Page, a director and Co-Executive Producer, "They gave their all and it shows in the performances."

The award also marks a first for the Dramatic Television Pilot Program at the USC School of Cinematic Arts. "The Pilot Program is unique," states Associate Professor Helaine Head, the Program's Coordinator. "Production wise each act is treated as an episode to mimic the production process and pace of television." Though Head and her seven member instructor panel function as "the network", the production is entirely student run. "It's a realistic experience for everyone involved," adds Writing Instructor, David Balkan. "As the show runner, Krystal led a writing room and three different production teams to produce a cohesive presentation that shows the promise of a real TV series. These students are amazing, and we couldn't be prouder that this particular production is being honored."

The Real Life has also piqued the interest of several television executives. "I'm just grateful that The Accolade Competition recognized a team that aspires to make series television for a living," says Thomas. "Having our work validated is truly inspiring." I've been going through a transitional period since my last post - I got new headshots (posted to the right), changed commercial agents, and began taking a cold reading class. I've been going on a good number of auditions lately. I booked an AFI graduate thesis film and have a callback for another one this Friday :)

Here are some pictures from the family car shoot I did:

This past Sunday I became a 5th Kyu Advanced Yellow Belt. Once I am green I can begin competing in kumite in addition to kata, I can't wait. We had beach training recently at Zuma Beach in Malibu, here's a pic below. You can click on it to see more pictures on my dojo's website:

I got promoted to my 6th Kyu Level 1 patch! ^_^ My favorite TV show right now is a Japanese show called "Ninja Warrior" on G4, where 100 contestants consisting of Olympians and others take on a challenging multi-level obstacle course. It's gripping, amazing, and hysterical. It comes on right before I have to go to karate too, so I get so psyched up. One of my goals for next year is to train and see if I can go to Japan and try out for the women's version.

My Bank of America print ad is currently running nationwide in all of the major Asian newspapers, so let me know if you see it!

I borrowed two documentaries from the library and I highly recommend them:

"The Future of Food" is absolutely eye-opening about the food industry and genetically engineered food, and "Murderball" is about the world of quadraplegic rugby and the power of the human spirit. In our karate class on Thursday night our teacher actually had us imagine we had lost use of our lower body and forced us to do all of these seemingly impossible things to make us realize what we could do if we pushed ourselves, and also to appreciate what we do have. It was such coincidental timing because I watched Murderball that night after class and was so inspired by their stories and the internal struggles they had to overcome. I am learning to look at times of adversity as the way to develop my inner strength.

I did two sketches recently - one where my nosy posy nature was on super high alert, and the other sketch came to me after I was reflecting on how I've grown:

I booked a Bank of America print job! Go me! :) I'm shooting it this Wednesday night. I love doing print jobs. I just got back pictures from the shoot I did three weeks ago with Sarah Banch for an AMEX tourist couple spec.. who knew maps could be so fun?

Since beginning Seido Karate 6 months ago, my life has changed so much for the better. My partner and I suggested to drastically revamp our dojo's website to our teachers and they were really happy we took the initiative to help out the dojo without them asking. I did the HTML coding and Photoshop work and my brilliant partner was the art director down to the teeniest tiny design detail, analyzing every pixel, word, created image, and thought that went into the site.
